William Wolf

I first came in touch with PCs in the late 80s; it was a 386 running DOS box with 2MB of memory and 30MB of disk space. I had no experience with PCs and had a hard time in comprehending the DOS manual. I bought I bunch of 3.4” floppy disks; but they didn’t work as expected; I couldn’t save any file on them.

I realized, soon enough, that you have to proceed the floppy disks with a special treatment before you can use them. The incantation was called “format c:”. Armed with this knowledge proceeded step by step as the example in the manual showed to type “format c:”, as explained in the manual the shell would ask me whether it was right to format this medium, as the data on it would be erased. Sure I had no data on the floppy disk; so I typed YES! The process took long, very long; it had to be normal as in the manual explained that “it would take some time”.

Did the floppy disk work after that: NO
Did I really erase everything on the hard drive: YES

After this special treatment my life changed, and I was hooked up into the computer world. The lesson learned: how to install a PC from scratch and reconfiguring and tweaking it installing, reinstalling tweaking. And trying out much stuff

[… After a decade …]

Predating (in Europe) the high-speed Internet, there was ICQ; thereat it was the hot thing, which only tech freaks had. At that golden age of chat we learned to trust everyone on the Internet, everybody is fine and friendly; therefor

William Wolf was born.

Another blog bites the bugs

Since I remember, I’ve always been procrastinating. Blogging is a way to simply get started.  The days where I left my beloved programming IDE Delphi 3.0-5.0; I felt like a modern  Odysseus, searching in vain my way home to the one true system, the one true language. I thought it would be a matter of finding where starting and building up the missing pieces.

After a decade of research; I haven’t found the start and I have lost what the true goal was.  But the magical ritual stood the same. Found a bug, a problem, then searched the Internet for a solution. Most of the time found one, end of the journey. Interesting was when no solution could be found. I started creating my own solution to the problem, but as soon as the task was accomplished the solution had always disappeared under a vertical cascade of archives and backups folders till the day it was deleted.

That’s a sad end for a hack that once gave me pleasure to instance it to live.

Something about this blog

This is my personal repository to store my thoughts, asking questions to myself and to find answers for a given problem at a given time. What to expect on this site? Problems and solution I face in my everyday life. In the first place, it is meant to be a record of what I have accomplished; a side effect might be that some Internet suffers to strand here and finds an answer to their quest. Many years the Internet stream gave me many answers; this site was built to give something back.

2009 I decided that the time had come for a change. Instead of solving some problem and after a success throwing away the solution; I think that it’s a great value to share the route I took and share the knowledge with the rest of us. I am stranded on an island of choices. Everything on the net is about choices. So many languages, OS, extensions, system, sites. Where to start, what to do, and where to go. I decided to create my personal one stop: www.ironicwolf.com
